The legendary mermaid, widely known in folklore, is believed to have originated from the gentle and adorable dugong. Fishermen, who rely on the sea for their livelihoods, are said to have mistaken the dugong for a mermaid at dusk, and this myth was passed down through word of mouth.

While dugongs were once spotted around Hengchun, nowadays, they can only be found overseas, and one must travel far to witness their endearing presence.
